Search Engine Optimisation
What is a search engine?
The Internet is such a large and almost limitless information resource. It would be impossible for anybody to consider browsing such a massive information pool, and thus the need for search engines.
The more popular search engines are Google, Yahoo, Bing, AOL, Ask and in South Africa, Ananzi. many of the smaller seach facilities use the engines and algorithms of the main engines listed above and is therefor not nessesary to target every search engine for good results and online exposure.
"A search engine is a retrieval tool designed to identify information on the internet according to keywords or relevant search phrases provided by means of queries typed in to search boxes."
How do Search Engines work?
Search engines use a program or automated script called "spiders" to search the internet to capture and store information. The search engine then indexes the "spider's" retrieved information which in turn supplies the search engine user or browser with a list of websites related to the keyword or search phrases supplied.
Basically the higher your ranking or position on a search engine the more hits or site visits your website will receive and the more effective your online marketing will be. It is therefore desirable to be on at least the first page of a search engine's results relating to your website content. There are various techniques for achieving good rankings and this is called Search Engine Optimisationor SEO.
